All Bones, No Body: Building a Headless EE Site with Astro for $0/month
Everyone loves to declare ExpressionEngine dead. Turns out it was just hiding the body. In this talk we pop the head clean off EE, turn it into a tidy content API, and bolt on a blazing-fast Astro front end, then ship the whole thing for exactly zero dollars a month.
We'll use a real build as the patient on the table: the marketing site for Karani, our donor management CRM. You'll see how to give editors a CMS they actually enjoy using, then hand a static site builder everything it needs to go fast.
What you'll walk away with:
Modeling real-world content with Bones, Bloqs, and Structure so editors get a clean, predictable authoring experience
Exposing that content to a decoupled front end without fighting the platform
Wiring up Astro to consume EE content and render a fully static site
Offloading images to Cloudflare R2 so your server stops sweating
Deploying to Netlify on the free tier, with a build pipeline that just works
Come for the skeleton puns, leave knowing ExpressionEngine has plenty of life left in it. It just looks better without the head.
